I didn’t use to love Twitter. At one time I had a hard time seeing the value in it. I first joined and I didn’t follow anyone and they didn’t follow me. I thought, whats the point. I was sure that it was a bunch of twits who would tell the world that they just ate a Mac and Cheese sandwich and wanted everyone to be happy for them.

Boy was I wrong. I’ve learned that Twitter is my go to place to discover whatever in the world I want to know. Whatever I want to learn about I go to twitter, find an expert to follow and then read what they have to say. When I really want to know something specific. I just ask. I almost always get a through answer.

Here’s an example. A few months back, a friend arranged for me to take a “ride along” in a LAPD Air Support Unit (aka Helicopter). Well being an amateur photographer I was thrilled. But then I wanted to learn everything I could about aerial photography and especially taking photographs in a helicopter. Where to turn? Well of course I Googled it and got some great information. But there was a lot of noise to  filter out and I was sure that there must be more. So what did I do? I turned to Twitter!

I reached out to some of the Giants of photography and they in turn reached out to their followers. In the end I received lots of encouragement, and some great tips! If you would like to see some of the results of my LAPD Helicopter Ride along you can check out some of my photos here on Art Smog. I hope you enjoy!

However the reason I write all this is to encourage you to explore Twitter. There are many, quirky, interesting places for you to go and explore. Mark Schaefer wrote a great blog post entitled “The 20 craziest things you can do on Twitter” It’s a great list full of interesting things. I won’t give it all away because you should really go and check it out for yourself. However I will share one of the twenty to best wet your appetite.

Rock out – Here is a list of the top 50 rock stars on Twitter.  The list includes Brittany Spears. I doth protest.

It’s good fun stuff that you should read. I think the reason it’s so good is because it shows such a cross reference of all the different things you can find on Twitter. Good Luck and i hope you find what you are looking for!
